What You Need to Know to Survive in the Wilderness
Wilderness survival was at one point in time a part of everyday life. Having an understanding and knowledge of survival skills is smart for anyone living in their modern cocoon, even though they may feel protected and safe. These skill sets are not only for backpackers, sportsmen and outdoor enthusiasts, although those are now the only people with such skills.
You might be asking what survival skills are. Survival skills is the know-how and techniques that could help and ultimately safe your life in hazardous conditions or dangerous locations. Skills like these could save your life if you are stuck in a storm or earthquake or if you are stranded in a desert, jungle, or mountains. You will want to at least know how to build a shelter, build a fire, pack a survival kit, and how to get clean drinking water. These are universal skills that could help you no matter what the situation or circumstance. These universal skills will be able to help you survive in any situation you find yourself in
The next couple of paragraphs will look at these survival skills and give you a better understanding what each skill entails. The order of focus for survival skills relate to the basic human needs and the circumstance you find yourself in. That being said, a shelter is usually the first task people need to take, this will protect you from harsh conditions. Shelter is a priority because it will get you out of the harsh conditions should it be intense sun, rain, or snow; you shelter could be a lean-to or could be constructed from the poncho that you have in your survival kit.
Clean drinking water is the next important skill to surviving in an extreme condition. You can do this in several different manners, and it depends on where you find yourself. This all depends on where you are, if you are in the jungle you could use condensation traps but other places you might be able to find a stream or river. Before any water should be considered drinkable you should bring it to a boil first.
To boil your water you will need fire, and this is the next survival skill you will need. Fire is useful for drying your clothes, purifying your drinking water, and keeping away dangerous animals and insects; fire is good for warmth as well as protection. A fire will make your survival easier and more comfortable but a shelter is still more important in most situations.
If you are prepared or have the ability to plan, a survival kit and first aid kit will be essential. I suggest every survival bag should have a survival guide and a first aid kit. You need to tend to your injuries in the wild before they get worse.
